When cell towers fail, power is unstable, or roads are blocked, local mesh networks can keep communication alive. Community-built radio networks provide a practical lifeline for alerts, check-ins, routing, and coordination.

Why Cell Towers Don't Survive Hurricanes

Cellular networks depend on three things that fail during hurricanes: towers, power, and backhaul.

  • 1) Tower structural integrity and/or equipment installed on the tower can fail in high winds.
  • 2) Grid power goes out as power lines are severed and poles are blown down, and emergency generators run out of fuel.
  • 3a) Interconnecting fiber optic backhaul cables between towers and central offices can be flooded or shorted by salt ocean water in underground cable vaults or roadside equipment huts.
  • 3b) Microwave backhaul dishes and their transmission cables can be damaged or brought down by high winds or flying debris.

When any one of these fails (tower/power/backhaul), your phone ceases to function as a cellular communications device.

Mesh Networks are Different

Each node is a self-contained radio, some the size of a credit card or cell phone. They run on milliwatts of power — a single 18650 battery (the same as in many vape/e-cigarettes) lasts 2–5 days, and a small 5W solar panel can run one indefinitely. They operate in the 915 MHz Industrial/Scientific/Medical license free band, which doesn't require a license (FCC PART 15). And because it's a mesh, messages hop from node to node — if one goes down, traffic routes around it.

Neighbors, volunteers, and responders can coordinate transportation, supplies, and wellness check-ins without relying on the internet.

Building a small network before an emergency makes it faster to support families, clinics, shelters, and response teams when events happen.

Emergency communications priorities

Focus on simple, reliable messaging first: check-ins, location awareness, routing, and trusted contact lists.

  • Keep a small set of core emergency contacts and frequencies documented.
  • Place mesh repeaters or mesh relay nodes where they can cover key neighborhoods and gathering points.
  • Practice short, clear messages that can be transmitted under stress.
  • Pair the mesh with battery backup, solar power, and simple offline plans. Portable mesh devices can be operated and recharged off cellular phone power banks.
